Sangkhlaburi Animal Sanctuary

From Emergency Rescues to Forever Homes

Stories your support made possible!

As we look back on the past few months, we are filled with gratitude for everything you have helped to make possible.

From reaching dogs and cats in remote border communities to caring for abandoned temple animals to bringing advanced diagnostic equipment to one of Thailand’s most isolated regions, your compassion has been at work every single day.

The stories below represent only a small glimpse of what your support has accomplished. Together, we are proving that geography, poverty, and lack of access do not have to determine whether an animal receives care.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

A Game Changer for Animal Rescue

For years, one of the greatest challenges we faced was uncertainty.

A dog would arrive unable to walk. A cat would be brought in after being struck by a motorbike. An injured puppy would be found trembling beside a road. We could examine them carefully, but without diagnostic imaging, we often had no way of knowing exactly what was happening beneath the surface. Was there a fracture? Internal trauma? A dislocated joint?

Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, those questions no longer have to go unanswered. This quarter, we officially began using our new portable x-ray machine, allowing us to diagnose injuries quickly and accurately both in our clinic and out in the field. Animals can now receive treatment faster, with less pain and far better outcomes.

For a remote sanctuary located hours from the nearest major veterinary facility, this equipment is truly transformational. THANK YOU for helping make it possible.

Taking Veterinary Care to the Border

Recently, our team loaded our ambulance with medicines, vaccines, deworming treatments, and medical supplies and traveled to Three Pagodas Pass, a remote community on the Thailand-Myanmar border. A local woman there was caring for 17 dogs. Transporting each animal to our clinic individually would have been nearly impossible. Instead, we brought the clinic to them.

Every dog received vaccinations, parasite treatment, and preventive care. We then returned to provide booster vaccinations and sterilize puppies old enough for surgery.

This is exactly why the ambulance matters. It allows us to reach animals who would otherwise receive little or no veterinary care simply because they live too far away or their communities lack resources. Every mile traveled represents animals helped, suffering prevented and lives improved.

Helping Temple Dogs

Across rural Thailand, temples are often seen as places of refuge and compassion. Sadly, many unwanted dogs are abandoned there. Monks do their best to help, but without veterinary care, sterilization, and vaccinations, populations quickly grow beyond what anyone can manage. Puppies are born into hardship, diseases spread, and preventable suffering becomes commonplace. This is why our outreach team visits local temples every week.

Over the past quarter, we have continued providing sterilization surgeries, vaccinations, medicines, emergency treatment, and ongoing care to dogs living on temple grounds. Every animal sterilized helps prevent future suffering. Every vaccine protects both animals and the surrounding community.

WE ARE DEEPLY GRATEFUL to everyone who helps keep these outreach programs moving forward.

Charlie’s Second Chance

Sometimes a photograph says everything.

When Charlie first came to us, his eyes reflected a dog who had simply given up. Like so many street dogs in our region, he had experienced hunger, hardship, and neglect. But Charlie’s story did not end there.

Thanks to the dedication of our team and the support of compassionate donors, Charlie received food, medical treatment, safety, and the care he desperately needed. Day by day, he began to recover. Today, Charlie reminds us why this work matters.

Not every rescue ends happily in a place as remote and challenging as Sangkhlaburi. But every time an animal like Charlie is given a second chance, we are reminded that kindness truly changes lives.

Tung Yai: From the Jungle to a Loving Home

Earlier this year, a small cat was discovered wandering alone near a rubber plantation deep in the jungle. She was missing an eye and struggling to survive.

A local woman did everything she could to help, using traditional remedies to slow infection until veterinary care could be found. When Tung Yai arrived at our clinic, our team provided antibiotics, pain relief, and ongoing treatment. Slowly she recovered.

The most wonderful part of this story is that the woman who found her decided she could not let her go. Today Tung Yai is healthy, safe, and living in a loving forever home. Stories like hers remind us how powerful compassion can be when people come together to help an animal in need.

Muela Hngi: A Gift of Comfort

Not every act of rescue is about saving a life. Sometimes it is simply about relieving suffering.

Muela Hngi had been a cherished member of a very kind lady’s family for 12 years when our volunteer veterinarians diagnosed severe glaucoma and irreversible damage in both eyes. She was completely blind and living with constant pain. Faced with a heartbreaking decision, her owner chose the path of compassion.

At our free clinic, Muela Hngi underwent surgery to remove both damaged eyes. Today she is recovering beautifully and, most importantly, she is comfortable once again.

In communities where veterinary care is otherwise unavailable, stories like Muela Hngi’s demonstrate why access to treatment matters so much. Every animal deserves the chance to live free from pain.

Looking Ahead

As another busy season and the holidays approach, we remain committed to providing emergency rescue, sterilization programs, outreach clinics, education, and life-saving veterinary care throughout one of Thailand’s most underserved regions.

None of this would be possible without you.

Whether you have donated, volunteered, shared our work, or simply followed our journey, you are helping create a future where more animals receive the care, compassion, and protection they deserve.

From all of us at the Sangkhlaburi Animal Sanctuary, thank you for being part of our mission.

With heartfelt gratitude,

PS: Giving Tuesday is just around the corner. It is one of the most important fundraising periods of the year for charities around the world. We hope you’ll keep the animals of Sangkhlaburi in mind when the day arrives. With your help, we can continue reaching dogs and cats wherever they are – no matter how remote, no matter how forgotten.
